The Fort Stewart soldier killed in the aircraft crash at Wright Army Airfield was identified as 26-year-old Capt. James T. Bellew.

The crash involved two HH-60 helicopters and occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on March 30, according to Fort Stewart Army officials, Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) have launched an investigation as part of routine policy in any non-combat death of a soldier, said a Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield press release. A safety investigation team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center is also investigating.

The press release did not mention if there were other injuries or fatalities involved. Wright Army Airfield has been closed until further notice.

Bellew was a native of Charlottesville, Virginia and was a decorated officer serving in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division before his death.

Bellew’s daily duties included medically evacuating critically ill COVID-19 patients to higher level of care across the country and being a key member of the brigade’s 24/7 mission to provide medical evacuation support for soldiers and families at Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and tenant units.

“James was a part of one of the noblest professions imaginable; he dedicated his life to serving our country and did so in a role where he was constantly helping, and saving the lives of others," said Vanek.

Vanek added that, while the investigation continues, they are ensuring their soldiers have the resources they need such as Chaplains and behavioral health services.
